A Winnipeg family is demanding answers after a 55-year-old woman died following an 11-hour wait in the St. Boniface Hospital emergency room on January 16, 2026. Stacey Ross, diagnosed with pneumonia and sepsis, had previously sought care on January 4, 2026, but was sent home without medication.
During her final visit on January 15, 2026, Ross was admitted to a room after waiting for hours. Shortly after, her oxygen levels dropped, and she was found to have a pulmonary embolism. Despite efforts to stabilize her, she died later that night.
Manitoba's Health Minister has called Ross's death a critical incident, with a dedicated team investigating long wait times and healthcare system improvements. The Winnipeg Regional Health Authority has also initiated a review and contacted the family.
