Summary
- Youth Crisis Response Team pairs officers with social workers.
- Program aims to provide faster, specialized mental health support.
- Provincial grant of $240,000 funds the initiative over two years.
Windsor Police Service has initiated the Youth Crisis Response Team (YCRT), a new program designed to deliver rapid, specialized assistance to young individuals facing mental health emergencies. This innovative approach joins police officers with a youth social worker from Hôtel-Dieu Grace Healthcare's Regional Children's Centre.
The YCRT will respond to calls involving youth under 16, offering immediate on-site support, safety planning, and coordinated follow-up for families. This effort is supported by a $240,000 provincial grant over two years, aimed at enhancing staffing, training, and program coordination.
This program addresses a growing concern, as Windsor police noted a 43% increase in criminal code occurrences involving youth between 2023 and 2024. The initiative builds upon existing successful collaborative models within the city, strengthening mental health care access for families.
