New Wilson Disease Trial Offers Hope
9 Sep
Summary
- A global Phase III trial for Wilson disease has begun.
- The study compares a new trientine formulation to D-penicillamine.
- Recruitment includes patients aged eight and above.

A significant global Phase III clinical trial, named the TRADITiONAL Study, has been launched by Orphalan to investigate a new formulation of trientine tetrahydrochloride for Wilson disease. This rare genetic disorder disrupts the body's ability to manage copper, leading to toxic build-up.
The study is a randomized, multi-centre trial comparing the experimental trientine regimen against D-penicillamine, a current first-line therapy. Participants aged eight and older who are new to Wilson disease treatments are being recruited for this 48-week study.
Initial clinical sites are in the US, with plans to expand to Saudi Arabia, China, and Pakistan. Orphalan aims to simplify treatment burdens for patients, addressing challenges with adherence to current complex regimens.
