Ventura County public health staff announced on Tuesday that a second bird has tested positive for West Nile virus this year, following confirmation from the California Department of Public Health. Officials anticipate more positive cases as the mosquito season continues.
The two infected birds were both located within the City of Ventura. The first was found on May 12, and the second was discovered on May 28. Environmental health staff will inspect and treat mosquito breeding sources near where the infected bird was found.
To minimize exposure, residents are advised to eliminate standing water, ensure screens on doors and windows are intact, wear long sleeves and pants when outdoors, especially at dawn and dusk, and use EPA-approved insect repellents. Public health confirmed no human cases of West Nile virus have occurred in the county so far this year. Concerns about mosquitoes or breeding sources can be reported to a dedicated hotline.
