West Nile Virus Detected in Local Mosquitoes

Ottawa Public Health has announced the first confirmation of West Nile Virus in the local mosquito population this year. As of July 26, there have been no confirmed or probable human cases in Ottawa, with only two reported across Ontario. The virus is typically asymptomatic in humans, but approximately 20% may develop flu-like symptoms such as fever and headache.
In rare instances, West Nile Virus can lead to severe neurological illness, particularly in older individuals. Ottawa Public Health advises residents to take preventive measures. These include eliminating sources of standing water around homes, as mosquitoes require it for breeding. Additionally, individuals are encouraged to protect themselves from bites by wearing long clothing and using insect repellent when outdoors.
