A third mosquito trap in San Marcos has tested positive for West Nile virus this month, according to Hays County officials. The Texas Department of State Health Services confirmed the positive result, which originated from a sample collected on July 17 within the 78666 zip code.
As of the current date, Hays County has not recorded any human cases of West Nile virus among its residents. Statewide, Texas health officials have documented 748 instances of the virus detected in mosquito trap samples this year.
Hays County's Development Services Department actively conducts mosquito surveillance from May through November. While most individuals infected with West Nile virus exhibit no symptoms, approximately 20% may develop flu-like symptoms such as fever, headache, and body aches.
To prevent the spread of the virus, the county urges residents to avoid mosquito bites and reduce mosquito populations. Recommended actions include using insect repellents, wearing long-sleeved clothing when outdoors, and draining or treating any standing water where mosquitoes might lay eggs.
