Health officials are reminding residents that mosquito-borne illnesses like West Nile virus are active until the first hard frost. They strongly advise taking protective measures. These include using EPA-registered insect repellents and eliminating sources of standing water around homes to reduce mosquito breeding grounds.
Additional preventive measures involve wearing long-sleeved shirts and pants, particularly when outdoors from dusk to dawn when mosquitoes are most active. Ensuring window and door screens are in good repair is also recommended to prevent entry.
While most West Nile virus infections are asymptomatic or cause mild flu-like symptoms, a small percentage can lead to serious neurological illness. Individuals over the age of 50 are at a higher risk for developing severe or life-threatening complications.
