Nine people in the Netherlands have been infected with the West Nile virus, and one death has been reported, according to the country's health authority. The Dutch National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) confirmed these cases on Thursday.
The infections were caused by bites from infected mosquitoes. One case was identified in a blood donor, while the remaining infections were found in patients admitted to hospitals presenting with symptoms. Health professionals are collaborating to monitor the virus's development and spread.
West Nile virus naturally circulates among birds and can be transmitted to humans and other mammals via infected mosquitoes. The RIVM previously reported a death related to a local contraction of the virus within the Netherlands. Approximately 80% of infections are asymptomatic, with a smaller percentage causing flu-like or more severe neurological illnesses.
