Doctors Strike: West Midlands Healthcare Under Pressure
17 Dec
Summary
- Resident doctors in the West Midlands have commenced a five-day strike action.
- The strike proceeds despite last-minute pay negotiations between the BMA and government.
- Hospitals in the region are experiencing higher-than-usual flu patient numbers.

Resident doctors in the West Midlands have initiated a five-day strike, commencing on December 17, 2025. This action over pay disputes is proceeding despite recent, last-minute negotiations between the British Medical Association (BMA) and the government. The walkout is expected to affect healthcare services across several key areas.
Dr. Jessica Sokolov, Midlands medical director for NHS England, highlighted the strain on the health system, noting 3,360 flu patients in acute and community hospitals, a figure higher than typically expected for this time of year. This situation underscores the challenges faced by the NHS during the industrial action.
Healthcare trusts in Birmingham, Coventry and Warwickshire, Herefordshire and Worcestershire, Staffordshire, Shropshire, and Wolverhampton are advising patients to proceed with appointments unless officially cancelled. They also recommend using NHS 111, pharmacies, and minor injuries units for appropriate conditions, aiming to mitigate the impact of the strike.
