Weight Loss Jabs Linked to Deadly Surgery Risk
17 Sep
Summary
- Weight loss jabs increase surgery complication risk by 11 times.
- Regurgitation and pulmonary aspiration are the main concerns.
- Obesity and diabetes are also risk factors for these complications.

A recent UK study has uncovered a potential link between popular weight loss injections and an increased risk of serious surgical complications. Patients using medications such as Wegovy and Mounjaro were found to be 11 times more likely to experience regurgitation, where stomach contents rise into the throat or mouth.
This complication can be perilous, leading to pulmonary aspiration if stomach fluid enters the lungs, causing airway obstruction or infections. Researchers noted that GLP-1 drugs can delay gastric emptying, meaning stomachs may not be fully empty before anesthesia, exacerbating this risk. The study involved over 47,000 patients undergoing surgery across the UK, with approximately 3% using these weight loss drugs in the months prior.
While the study highlights an association, the authors caution that causality cannot be definitively established, as obesity and diabetes, common conditions in GLP-1 users, are also known aspiration risk factors. Nevertheless, patients are strongly advised to disclose their use of these weight loss medications to their surgical teams to ensure appropriate safety measures are taken during procedures.
