Weight-Loss Jabs Linked to Surge in Eye Problems

Recent data indicates a sharp rise in suspected eye conditions linked to popular weight-loss injections such as Mounjaro and semaglutide. For Mounjaro, reports of eye strokes jumped from zero in 2024 to 12 in 2025, with eight additional cases noted in the first half of 2026. Semaglutide, found in Wegovy and Ozempic, saw 11 suspected Naion reports in the first half of 2026, exceeding the total for the preceding three years.
Blurred vision is the most common symptom, appearing approximately 330 times for both drugs. More severe outcomes, including blindness affecting one or both eyes, have been reported over 60 times. Dozens of users also described sudden or temporary sight loss, and retinal issues like bleeds and detachments contribute to the growing number of suspected adverse events.
The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) issued a safety warning in February 2026, urging prompt medical attention for sudden sight disturbances. While the MHRA emphasizes that Naion remains rare and suspected reports don't confirm causality, the spike is partly attributed to increased awareness following their alert. They also note that these jabs can exacerbate advanced diabetic eye changes.
Novo Nordisk, the manufacturer of semaglutide, states that patient safety is paramount and that their data does not suggest a causal link between semaglutide and Naion. They maintain that the benefits of semaglutide outweigh the risks, a stance echoed by regulatory bodies who continually review the safety of these widely prescribed medications.
