Boots Pauses Injections Over Safety Fears
12 Aug
Summary
- Weight loss injections require storage below 8C.
- Standard packaging failed in temperatures above 30C.
- New packaging to allow delivery up to 35C is coming.

Weight loss injections, including popular medications like Wegovy and Mounjaro, are currently not being delivered to homes by Boots due to safety concerns during the heatwave. The pharmacy chain made this decision after new testing by its Online Doctor service indicated that standard cold chain packaging fails to keep the medication below the required 8C when outdoor temperatures surpass 30C.
Eight tests conducted in late June, coinciding with temperatures over 30C, all showed the medication arriving above the safe temperature limit. This has led to a temporary pause in deliveries, with Boots advising patients to collect their prescriptions from stores. A pharmacist lead emphasized that patient safety is the top priority, even if it causes inconvenience.
Boots anticipates introducing new packaging in the coming weeks that is designed to maintain the medication's integrity at temperatures up to 35C. Until then, ensuring the quality and effectiveness of these temperature-sensitive injections remains the focus, with a recommendation for patients to check their medication upon receipt.
