A woman in Suzhou, China, faced a life-threatening health crisis after purchasing a weight loss injection online. The 28-year-old, identified as Chen, bought a three-injection package for 900 yuan (US$130) after seeing a friend's social media post promising significant weight loss.
Initially experiencing rapid weight loss of 5kg in four days, Chen soon developed severe symptoms including nausea, vomiting bile, and stomach lining damage. Her condition worsened dramatically when she began vomiting blood while undergoing a medical procedure. She lost consciousness and narrowly avoided a critical condition notice, requiring extensive emergency treatment.
Subsequent investigations by Chinese state broadcaster CCTV exposed that such weight loss injections were unregulated. They were being sold under various trendy names, often manufactured in unlicensed workshops using forged or borrowed production licenses, highlighting a dangerous lack of oversight in online sales.
