Weight Drugs May Treat Sleep Apnea
8 Sep
Summary
- GLP-1 receptor agonists are being studied for sleep apnea treatment.
- Obesity is a major risk factor for obstructive sleep apnea.
- Weight loss medications may improve sleep apnea symptoms.

Researchers are investigating the potential of GLP-1 receptor agonists, known as weight-loss drugs such as Ozempic and Wegovy, to help individuals with obstructive sleep apnea. This condition, which affects nearly one billion people globally, is characterized by breathing interruptions during sleep due to airway blockage and is strongly linked to obesity.
Obesity, defined as a body mass index of 30 or higher, is present in a significant majority of sleep apnea patients and is considered a primary modifiable risk factor. Excess weight around the neck can narrow the airway, making it more prone to collapse during sleep. These medications may help reduce fatty deposits that contribute to sleep apnea.
Current evidence suggests that GLP-1 receptor agonists could positively impact some patients with obstructive sleep apnea by improving airway passage and lung function. However, these drugs are not a substitute for established treatments and long-term usage is necessary for sustained benefits. Further research is ongoing.
