Weight Loss Drugs Linked to Spike in Haemorrhoids

According to health experts, the growing popularity of weight loss drugs like Mounjaro and Ozempic has led to a significant spike in haemorrhoid cases over the past year. Dr. Ross Perry, founder of Cosmedics Skin Clinics, reports a 41% rise in patients seeking treatment for piles in the last 6 months alone, with many of them taking GLP-1 medications.

The issue stems from how these weight loss drugs slow down digestion and cause constipation, leading to straining and the development of haemorrhoids. In addition, some patients are hitting the gym to counter muscle loss from the drugs, but the weight training can also exacerbate the problem.

Experts advise that while weight loss drugs are generally well-tolerated, the increase in dosage can trigger unpleasant side effects like haemorrhoids. They recommend seeking medical help if the discomfort becomes debilitating, and taking steps like increasing fibre intake, staying hydrated, and using over-the-counter creams to manage the condition.
