Wegovy Pill Arrives: Pharmacies Brace for Weight Loss Drug Rush
6 Jul
Summary
- The first GLP-1 weight loss pill, Wegovy, is now available in UK pharmacies.
- 76% of pharmacies expect significant new patient numbers for Wegovy.
- Pharmacies worry about counterfeit Wegovy pills entering the market.

Pharmacies in the UK are gearing up for a surge in demand for the newly available Wegovy tablet, the first GLP-1 pill approved for weight loss by the MHRA. Starting doses of 1.5mg will increase gradually, with patients remaining on each dose for a minimum of one month. Eligible patients can now access the initial 1.5mg and 4mg doses through select pharmacy weight management programs.
A survey by the National Pharmacy Association revealed that 76% of responding pharmacies expect to begin treating a significant number of new patients with the Wegovy pill soon. Nearly half of these pharmacies have already noted a rise in inquiries following the drug's approval in June. This signifies a crucial step in weight loss treatment accessibility, particularly for those who prefer not to use injectable medications.
However, a significant concern among 97% of surveyed pharmacies is the potential for an increase in counterfeit Wegovy pills. The NPA strongly advises patients to obtain the medication exclusively through regulated pharmacies after a thorough consultation to avoid a burgeoning black market. They emphasize that weight loss medication is not a universal solution but can be a valuable aid for eligible individuals when combined with diet and lifestyle changes.
