A significant outbreak of Shigellosis, a highly contagious bacterial intestinal infection, has affected Wayanad, Kerala. Health authorities confirmed that two students, a boy and a girl aged four and five respectively, tested positive for the infection.
In total, 339 individuals have presented with symptoms associated with Shigellosis. Among them, 21 are currently receiving treatment at the Sultan Bathery Taluk Headquarters Hospital, and 38 others are being treated in private healthcare facilities. Laboratory testing of 21 collected samples is ongoing, with two positive results returned so far.
This situation has heightened concern following the death of a four-year-old girl in Kozhikode Medical College, who was infected with Shigella. Health officials emphasize that the infection spreads through contaminated food or water and poses particular risks to vulnerable populations, potentially causing diarrhea, fever, and intestinal complications. A special medical team from Kozhikode Medical College has been dispatched to Wayanad to oversee the response.
