Factory Canteen Shut Over Shocking Hygiene Failures
4 Oct
Summary
- Raw and cooked food stored together; vegetarian and non-veg items mixed.
- Canteen failed FDA hygiene audit with 42% score, deemed 'non-compliant'.
- License suspended due to critical violations posing health risks.
A company canteen in Waluj MIDC has ceased operations after the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) found critical food safety and hygiene breaches during an inspection on September 30. Inspectors discovered raw and cooked foods were stored together, and vegetarian and non-vegetarian items shared containers, increasing cross-contamination risks. Cooking oil was reused without mandatory safety checks, and essential equipment like a refrigerator was found rusted and damaged.
The canteen failed the FDA's comprehensive 106-point hygiene audit, scoring only 44% and receiving a 'non-compliant' grade. Food handlers lacked valid medical certificates. The FDA suspended the canteen's license, halting all catering activities immediately due to the grave public health risks. The license will only be reinstated after all deficiencies are rectified and a re-inspection is passed.
Separately, a pizza outlet in Bajaj Nagar also had its food license suspended following repeated violations. Inspections on September 2 and September 29 uncovered issues like improper food storage, lack of testing records, and outdated pest control measures. The FDA plans to continue enforcement actions against industrial canteens and caterers violating food safety norms in the Waluj and Shendra industrial areas.
