A walk-and-talk therapy group, initiated to honor a friend who died by suicide in 2018, has been life-changing for many. Founder Maj Mahmood was inspired to help men overcome the stigma of discussing mental health struggles after his friend, Simon Walker, died unexpectedly.
What began as a social media invitation for a walk in October 2018 has evolved into a community interest company. The group now organizes regular walks, including annual treks up Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) and the Glow walk along the Pendle Sculpture Trail, attracting over 150 participants at times.
These walks offer a supportive environment for individuals to open up about their challenges. Maj Mahmood has observed a significant shift in societal attitudes, noting that more men are engaging in these conversations. He has received feedback from some participants stating that the group has literally saved their lives.
The initiative has profoundly impacted Maj Mahmood, leading him to a new career as a youth worker and walk-and-talk therapist. He finds fulfillment in his new role, which allows him to support young people and continue the work that began in memory of his friend. Simon's mother is also a strong supporter of the group.
