Wales' 'Tinder Clinicians' Rethink Ambulance Calls
15 Jul
Summary
- Call handlers are nicknamed 'Tinder clinicians' for their triage method.
- Most emergency calls in Wales do not result in an ambulance dispatch.
- Only 2.6% of monthly calls are deemed life-threatening 'purple calls'.
Control room staff in Wales are gaining international recognition for a novel system used to categorize emergency calls. These staff have been nicknamed 'Tinder clinicians' due to their triage method, which involves categorizing calls into priority levels from 'purple' and 'red' for the most urgent, down to 'green' for lower priority.
This innovative approach means the majority of incoming calls in Wales do not result in an ambulance being dispatched. For instance, calls concerning alcohol withdrawal or elderly individuals who have fallen at home are handled differently. Only a small fraction, approximately 2.6% of monthly calls, are classified as the most life-threatening 'purple calls' requiring an immediate blue-light response within a target of six to eight minutes. This system aims to optimize resource allocation for critical cases.
