Summary
- Vitamin D supplements may help protect telomeres, which slow aging.
- A 2,000 IU daily dose of vitamin D showed promising results in a study.
- Shorter telomeres are linked to major age-related diseases.

New findings suggest that vitamin D supplements might help preserve telomeres, the protective caps on our chromosomes that are linked to slowing the aging process. A recent five-year study conducted in the US followed over 1,000 individuals aged 65 and older. Participants who took 2,000 IU of vitamin D daily demonstrated preserved telomere length compared to those receiving a placebo.
Telomeres naturally shorten each time a cell divides, and this shortening is associated with several age-related diseases, including cancer and heart disease. Factors such as smoking, stress, and inflammation can accelerate this process. Vitamin D is known for its role in bone health and immune function, and its anti-inflammatory properties could explain its potential protective effect on telomeres.
While the study's results are encouraging, researchers caution against high-dose supplementation without further investigation. The optimal vitamin D dosage is still debated, and extremely long telomeres might not always be beneficial. The strongest advice for healthy aging remains a balanced diet, regular exercise, quality sleep, and stress management.
