A vitamin B3 supplement, nicotinamide, has shown potential in reducing the incidence of non-melanoma skin cancers, according to a large-scale study. Researchers analyzed health records of over 33,800 U.S. veterans and observed a 14% decrease in new skin cancer developments among those taking 500 mg of nicotinamide twice daily.
The study focused on basal cell carcinoma and cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma, the most common skin cancers in the U.S. The benefits were most pronounced when nicotinamide was initiated early in a patient's history of skin cancer, particularly for the more aggressive cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma.
Unlike other skin cancer preventative medications, nicotinamide is available over-the-counter and does not require laboratory monitoring or carry risks of severe side effects like liver failure. This ease of use and safety profile could shift clinical practice towards earlier preventative use.
