Virus Patients Arrive in US Amidst Outbreak Fear
12 May
Summary
- Two virus-exposed patients arrived in Atlanta from a ship outbreak.
- One patient is symptomatic and receiving care in a biocontainment unit.
- Hantavirus spreads through contact with rodent excrement, not easily airborne.

Dramatic footage showed hospital staff in hazmat suits receiving virus-exposed patients in Atlanta, Georgia. These two individuals were transported from the MV Hondius, a vessel that experienced a deadly rat-borne virus outbreak, resulting in three fatalities. Emory University Hospital confirmed their arrival following the incident at sea.
One of the patients is symptomatic and is being treated in Emory's specialized biocontainment unit. The second patient is asymptomatic and is undergoing evaluation. Health officials have reassured the public that the symptomatic patient poses no risk of a global pandemic, as hantavirus transmission differs significantly from respiratory viruses.
Infectious disease specialists explained that hantavirus primarily spreads through contact with rodent droppings and is not easily transmitted through the air like influenza or coronavirus. Unlike viruses affecting the upper airways, hantavirus targets deeper lung tissues. Currently, no vaccine is available for hantavirus infection.
