Four passengers from the MV Hondius have been isolated in a hospital for observation, remaining in isolation until further notice. They were transported from the ship in biocontainment units out of an abundance of caution. Health authorities in France have identified 22 hantavirus contact cases.
Three deaths have been linked to the outbreak, either on board the MV Hondius or after disembarking. The ship had departed from Argentina about a month before arriving in Tenerife on Sunday morning. Spanish authorities initiated a controlled evacuation, organizing passengers by nationality.
Other passengers who tested negative are undergoing re-testing. In total, eight cases of the virus had been reported as of May 8, according to the World Health Organization. Those assessed in Nebraska will receive care based on their condition.
