UK Rescues Citizens from Virus-Hit Cruise Ship
9 May
Summary
- Brits on virus-hit cruise ship MV Hondius are being flown home Sunday.
- Passengers will be tested for hantavirus before disembarking in Tenerife.
- Confirmed cases linked to outbreak total nine, with three deaths reported.

British passengers and crew from the virus-struck MV Hondius cruise ship are en route to the UK, with arrival expected on Sunday. The vessel is scheduled to dock in Tenerife, where UK Health Security Agency and Foreign Office officials will greet the returning Britons. All individuals on board will be tested for hantavirus before disembarking.
Those who test negative and show no symptoms will proceed directly to a repatriation flight back to the UK. This flight will be equipped with medical professionals and supplies to manage any potential health emergencies. The majority of returning Britons are expected to self-isolate at home, with alternative facilities arranged if necessary.
The hantavirus outbreak has been linked to nine confirmed and suspected cases, resulting in three fatalities. Two British men are currently receiving treatment in the Netherlands and South Africa, respectively, while a third is being cared for in Tristan da Cunha. Of the 30 British nationals associated with the ship, 22 remain on board.
Officials are diligently tracing individuals who had contact with confirmed cases. The UKHSA is investigating the virus's spread, noting that previous outbreaks suggest transmission occurs through close contact, primarily when individuals exhibit symptoms. The current strain is not believed to be more transmissible than previous variants.
Passengers developing symptoms before the ship reaches Tenerife will receive treatment there. Upon arrival in the UK, returning individuals will not be permitted to use public transport for self-isolation, which will last for 45 days with self-testing. Further testing will occur after this isolation period concludes.
