NHS Highland is set to launch an innovative virtual support service for individuals experiencing chronic fatigue syndrome, also known as ME/CFS. This new initiative will expand upon the health board's existing long Covid service, providing online consultations to patients residing in the Highlands and Argyll and Bute.
Beginning in spring, referred patients will receive tailored strategies to manage their symptoms, as explained by Dr. Janet Scott, a consultant physician. A dedicated team of medical professionals will develop personalized treatment plans, emphasizing that the condition affects individuals uniquely. The goal is to help patients improve their quality of life and maintain societal engagement.
This service expansion is supported by £4.5 million in annual funding announced by the Scottish government for health boards to invest in specialist services for ME/CFS and related conditions. Patients like Janis Armstrong, who has lived with ME/CFS since 2018, express hope that this new approach will make the condition feel less daunting and offer a path towards receiving much-needed help.
