Victoria Hospitals: Violence Soars 44% Against Staff

Workplace violence against Victorian healthcare staff has dramatically escalated, with reported incidents in public hospitals soaring by 44% in the last three years. Last year alone saw nearly 24,000 violent events, equating to approximately 65 daily occurrences. Healthcare professionals are facing physical assaults like punching and kicking, alongside a disturbing rise in sexualised and racialised verbal abuse.

This escalating violence, described as routine by emergency doctors, is causing significant psychological harm and contributing to widespread burnout. To address this crisis, medical colleges are urging political action, demanding 24/7 trained security in all emergency departments and a dedicated taskforce reporting directly to the health minister. Concerns remain about inconsistent security measures in regional areas.

The situation is exacerbated by hospital overcrowding, with thousands of Victorians spending over 24 hours in emergency departments due to a lack of inpatient beds. This prolonged stay, especially for mentally unwell and elderly patients, creates a volatile environment. Experts warn that without intervention, the crisis risks tragic outcomes, including the potential death of staff or patients, and a mass exodus of experienced healthcare workers.
