The Vasai-Virar region is currently grappling with a significant rise in dog bite cases. Officials reported an average of 166 incidents daily during January and February of 2026, totaling over 10,120 cases in these two months alone. This alarming trend has been exacerbated by the recent death of nine-year-old Kashish Sahani in Nalasopara due to rabies contracted from a dog bite.
In response to the escalating situation, the Vasai Virar City Municipal Corporation has ramped up its preventive measures. A comprehensive rabies vaccination and sterilization drive commenced this week, aiming to significantly increase the number of dogs treated compared to the 15,741 dogs reached last year. Medical Officer Bhakti Chaudhary emphasized the critical importance of immediate medical attention for all dog bites, assuring citizens that anti-rabies vaccines are readily available at all primary health centers and civic hospitals.
