Doctors from Shanghai Renji Hospital have successfully completed Uzbekistan's first living donor liver transplant, utilizing a minimally invasive technique. This groundbreaking procedure took place on Sunday during a medical assistance mission to the Central Asian nation. The technique involves small incisions, significantly reducing surgical trauma and aiding donor recovery compared to traditional open surgery.
The operation involved a 42-year-old woman suffering from acute-on-chronic liver failure, a life-threatening condition. Her 19-year-old son served as the donor. The Shanghai team, renowned for its extensive experience in liver transplantation, collaborated with local medical professionals in Tashkent to ensure the success of this high-risk procedure.
Beyond the surgical feat, the mission emphasized knowledge transfer. Renji Hospital shared its expertise in transplant care, donor safety protocols, and standardized procedures. A memorandum of understanding was signed to foster ongoing cooperation, including training, joint case discussions, and improved pre- and post-operative care.
This initiative not only introduces advanced surgical methods to Uzbekistan but also strengthens the country's capacity for complex medical treatments. Renji Hospital has a history of sharing its transplant protocols internationally, having previously assisted Malaysia with similar procedures.
