Uttarakhand Adults Face Rising Diabetes and Obesity
31 May
Summary
- Uttarakhand adults show high rates of diabetes and obesity.
- Sedentary lifestyles are contributing to these health issues.
- Hypertension indicators have shown improvement among adults.

New findings from the National Family Health Survey-6 indicate a notable increase in diabetes and obesity among adults in Uttarakhand. The survey reveals elevated blood sugar levels in 18.1% of women and 21.4% of men, surpassing national averages. Similarly, obesity rates stand at 34.3% for women and 26.5% for men.
Health experts link these trends to evolving lifestyles in the hills. Shifts towards sedentary jobs and reduced physical labor, coupled with dietary changes, are cited as primary causes. This indicates that lifestyle diseases are no longer limited to specific socioeconomic groups.
Despite these concerns, the survey noted improvements in hypertension indicators. The proportion of women and men with elevated blood pressure has declined significantly compared to previous surveys and national figures. However, challenges remain in patient acceptance of long-term diabetes treatment, particularly among older individuals.
