Your State's Flu Vulnerability Revealed
9 Mar
Summary
- Flu vulnerability differs significantly across US states.
- Researchers analyzed 39 socioeconomic and health factors.
- Eleven states show a "very low" flu vulnerability.

State of residence can significantly impact an individual's vulnerability to contracting the flu. Researchers at Washington University in St. Louis have developed an index to assess this risk across the United States, considering various socioeconomic and health indicators.
Their analysis factored in 39 elements, including migration patterns and insurance coverage, to identify non-linear relationships with flu vulnerability. This approach helps pinpoint "hotspots" where targeted prevention strategies can be most effective.
Eleven states, such as Alabama, Georgia, and Texas, were found to have "very low" vulnerability. Conversely, states like Arizona, California, and New York, along with Washington D.C., were categorized as having "high" or "very high" vulnerability due to factors like population density and demographics.
The findings underscore that vulnerability is shaped by a combination of urbanization, demographics, healthcare access, and economic disparities. This research aims to bolster epidemic preparedness and response by providing a clearer picture of flu risk across different regions.
