US Healthcare Costs Skyrocket: 1 in 6 Adults Uninsured

America's healthcare spending far exceeds that of other developed nations, totaling $5.3 trillion in 2024, without yielding better health outcomes. Approximately 1 in 6 U.S. adults are uninsured because of prohibitive costs, leading to widespread financial anxiety and medical debt. In North Carolina, healthcare affordability is a critical issue, with the state ranking 38th in access and affordability and 15th in hospital prices.

Governor Josh Stein has established the North Carolina Health Care Affordability Commission to address these challenges. The commission recently convened, learning that medical debt in collections is a severe problem, with 8% of North Carolinians contacted by collection agencies in 2023, the fourth highest rate nationally. High hospital and physician costs, coupled with a lack of price transparency, are major drivers of these expenses.

Efforts to control costs include examining strategies from Indiana, which has enacted laws mandating price transparency and regulating hospital fees. The commission also considers the role of technology and telehealth in improving efficiency and accessibility. However, a significant portion of the population prefers traditional interactions with known providers over digital solutions. The commission is expected to present its recommendations to Governor Stein by January 2027.
