US Drug Crisis: New Mexico Leads Stark State Rankings
29 Apr
Summary
- New Mexico leads US states in overall drug problems, especially youth use and overdose.
- National overdose deaths dropped 24% in 2024, the largest single-year decline.
- Overdose remains the leading cause of death for Americans aged 18-44.

New data reveals significant state-by-state disparities in drug use, overdose fatalities, and treatment accessibility across the United States. New Mexico has emerged as the state with the most substantial drug problem, largely due to elevated rates of youth drug use and a high number of overdose deaths.
The nation has witnessed a notable reduction in overdose fatalities. Preliminary estimates from the CDC indicate approximately 87,000 drug overdose deaths occurred in 2024, a 24 percent decrease from the 114,000 reported in 2023. This represents the largest single-year decline ever recorded.
Despite this positive trend, overdose remains the leading cause of death for Americans between 18 and 44 years old. New Mexico specifically recorded the highest percentage of teenagers using illicit drugs and a high rate of children living with individuals facing alcohol or drug issues.
Arkansas and Alaska followed New Mexico in the rankings, with Arkansas showing concerns related to youth exposure to drugs and limited support services. Alaska experienced severe overdose impacts, ranking second nationally in overdose deaths and seeing a significant year-over-year increase.
The report, compiled by WalletHub, analyzed 20 indicators of drug abuse and its consequences, comparing all 50 states and Washington, D.C. These indicators included overdose deaths, opioid prescriptions, drug-related arrests, and access to treatment services.
