An alarming increase in infections linked to the cyclospora parasite has been observed across the United States. As of Thursday, Michigan has reported 1,251 cases and 44 hospitalizations, a substantial rise from earlier in the week. New York is also experiencing a significant number of cases, with nearly 400 reported. Both Ohio and North Carolina have each recorded around 200 cases.
Federal health officials note that the total number of ill individuals is likely higher due to unreported cases. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has received reports of 531 cases, which is four times the number reported at this time last year. Previous major outbreaks occurred in 2019 and 1996, linked to contaminated food items.
Investigators are actively working to pinpoint the sources of exposure, but currently, there is no evidence of a single common factor linking the infections. Symptoms, including gastrointestinal distress, typically appear about a week after consuming contaminated food or water. Doctors recommend antibiotic treatment for cyclosporiasis, which is not typically life-threatening. Practicing thorough food washing and cooking food to 158 degrees Fahrenheit are recommended preventative measures.
