Urgent: Free Meningitis B Jabs for Students!
15 Aug
Summary
- Less than 100,000 students received jabs since July 20.
- One million young people are eligible for free vaccination.
- Meningitis B can be fatal, causing death within hours.

Young people are urged to get their free Meningitis B vaccinations promptly. The NHS campaign, launched on July 20, offers a two-dose jab to one million eligible individuals in England. However, uptake has been low, with under 100,000 youngsters vaccinated so far. This initiative aims to protect students as university terms commence next month.
University life, with its close-contact settings like halls of residence, increases the risk of infection spreading rapidly. Pharmacists stress that Meningitis B can become serious very quickly and vaccination offers crucial peace of mind. The course requires two doses administered at least four weeks apart. Experts encourage booking now to ensure protection before the start of the academic year.
The vaccination is available for those who were in Year 13 during the 2025/26 academic year, first-time university students under 25 living in residential accommodation, and international students under 25 starting university this year. Meningitis B is a severe bacterial infection that can lead to life-threatening meningitis and septicaemia, with a fatality rate of 10%.
Tragically, three students died earlier this year from separate clusters in Kent, Berkshire, and Dorset. Early symptoms can mimic the flu, but can progress rapidly to include high fever, severe headache, stiff neck, and a non-fading rash. Anyone concerned about symptoms should seek immediate medical attention. Eligible individuals can check their status and find participating pharmacies, including Well Pharmacy, via the NHS website.
