Legionnaires' Deaths Rise to 4 on Upper East Side

New York City health officials confirmed a fourth fatality on Monday in connection with the Upper East Side Legionnaires' disease cluster. The announcement also brought renewed optimism, as Dr. Alister Martin indicated the outbreak may be nearing its end. He stated that any source of exposure has likely been eliminated and no new cases have emerged in over a week.

Officials reported that 76 cases of Legionnaires' disease have been connected to this cluster. Of these, four individuals have died, seven remain hospitalized, 53 have been discharged, and 12 did not require hospitalization. The suspected source, believed to be contaminated water vapor from a cooling tower, is thought to be contained after 76 buildings tested positive and underwent cleaning. Residents experiencing flu-like symptoms after visiting the affected area are advised to seek medical attention.
