New COVID Vaccines Target XFG Strain for Winter
28 Aug
Summary
- Updated COVID-19 vaccines target the recombinant omicron XFG strain.
- Eligibility varies by age and underlying health conditions.
- Vaccines may be available at pharmacies, hospitals, and clinics.

As summer concludes and students return to school, updated COVID-19 vaccines are being released. The FDA has approved new mRNA vaccines from Moderna and Pfizer, along with a protein-based shot from Sanofi, to target the prevalent XFG strain of the virus. This strain, a recombinant omicron variant, currently represents about 40% of U.S. cases.
The updated vaccines are designed to offer protection against the dominant circulating strain, aiming for better efficacy as seen with annual flu shots. Eligibility for Moderna's vaccine includes individuals aged 6 months to 64 with underlying conditions and all those 65 and older. Pfizer's vaccine is approved for ages 5 to 64 with underlying conditions and individuals over 65. Underlying conditions include a range of health issues like cancer, diabetes, and heart conditions.
These vaccines are anticipated to be available in pharmacies, hospitals, and clinics across the U.S. shortly. Public health experts confirm it is safe to receive COVID-19 shots concurrently with flu or RSV vaccines. While previous free vaccine programs have ended, many insurance plans, including Medicare and Medicaid, are expected to cover the updated COVID-19 vaccine.
Vaccination remains crucial for preventing severe illness, hospitalization, and death, especially for high-risk groups. Experts emphasize the importance of vaccination for individuals aged 65 and older, the immunocompromised, pregnant women, and very young children.
