25 Oct
Summary
- Over half of UP women with breast abnormalities skip diagnostic tests.
- Many women reach hospitals with advanced breast cancer.
- Stigma, fear, and financial hardship are key barriers to follow-up.
In Uttar Pradesh, a significant concern has emerged regarding women's follow-up on breast abnormalities. More than half of women identified with irregularities during physical examinations do not proceed with confirmatory diagnostic tests. This delay results in many breast cancer cases being diagnosed at advanced stages, compromising treatment efficacy.
Experts from King George's Medical University pointed out that numerous women drop out of the care pathway between screening and diagnosis. A study revealed that out of 51,894 screened women, only 41% of those with abnormal results pursued further evaluation. This gap is critical, as delayed confirmation tests lead to advanced stages.
Barriers to completing investigations include societal stigma, fear of cancer, lack of awareness, family duties, financial constraints, and transport issues. Women also report discomfort with male doctors and challenges navigating healthcare systems. These factors collectively undermine early detection efforts.
Nearly 70% of women diagnosed with breast cancer reach hospitals in advanced stages, severely limiting treatment options. If detected early, when tumors are less than 5 cm, a higher percentage of the breast can be saved. Advanced cases may require full mastectomy.
Compounding the issue, some patients opt for unproven alternative therapies before seeking timely medical intervention. Incomplete surgeries performed outside specialized centers also pose a risk, potentially leaving residual cancer tissue and increasing disease aggression.
To address these challenges, strengthening follow-up systems through ASHA workers and mobile support is recommended. Providing respectful care, practical assistance, and robust referral mechanisms are vital steps to improve patient outcomes.
