Uttar Pradesh is launching a significant initiative to enhance menstrual hygiene for adolescent girls across the state. All girl students in government schools, from Class 6 to 12, will receive free sanitary napkins. This program also extends its reach to adolescent girls attending government-aided schools, as well as those who are not currently enrolled in school or have previously dropped out.
The decision was formalized during a meeting of the State-Level Menstrual Health and Hygiene Committee. Officials emphasized strengthening access to essential health and hygiene services for adolescent girls. Efforts will focus on ensuring these services reach every girl, particularly those from vulnerable backgrounds or outside the formal education system.
Furthermore, the state plans to integrate regular awareness and education programs on menstruation and adolescent health into school curricula. These programs will inform girls about menstruation before its onset, aiding their preparation. The initiative also includes digital and community-based campaigns to promote safe menstrual practices and address societal stigma and myths.
