Tampon Safety: Parliament Must Act Now!
7 Mar
Summary
- Tampons lack product-specific safety testing in the UK.
- Some tampons contain heavy metals and pesticides like glyphosate.
- An e-petition urges government action on tampon safety and labeling.

In the UK, tampons remain unregulated, lacking specific safety testing and ingredient disclosure, despite being used by millions monthly. This oversight contrasts sharply with regulations for everyday items like sponges and candles. Concerns have been amplified by studies revealing potential contaminants such as heavy metals and pesticides, including glyphosate, in some tampons.
In response, the organic period care brand TOTM has launched a public campaign, including an e-petition. This initiative, supported by other period care brands, aims to compel the government to introduce mandatory safety testing and clear ingredient labeling for tampons.
The petition is close to achieving a government response, with just 2,500 signatures remaining. If it reaches 100,000 signatures, the issue will be debated in Parliament, potentially leading to significant policy changes for menstrual health.
