6 Mar
Summary
- A mother received a life-saving liver transplant from her daughter's coworker.
- The donor, a doctor with four children, stepped up despite a busy schedule.
- More than 100,000 people nationwide are currently on the transplant waiting list.

A remarkable act of generosity has given a New Kensington woman a new lease on life. Jaylynne Kemerly, who has been managing a liver disease since 2007, received a life-saving liver transplant on August 11 of last year. The donor was Dr. Brianna Bayer, a coworker of Kemerly's daughter.
Despite Kemerly's family members not being a match, Dr. Bayer, a physician and mother of four, stepped forward. She explained her motivation stemmed from witnessing Kemerly's declining health through her daughter's eyes. Bayer offered to donate two-thirds of her liver, a procedure that Kemerly underwent at Allegheny General Hospital.
More than six months post-transplant, both women are recovering well. Kemerly's body has accepted the new liver, and Bayer's liver has regenerated. Kemerly considers Bayer her "miracle" and is profoundly thankful for the extended time with her family. This event highlights the critical need for organ donors, with over 100,000 individuals currently on the national transplant waiting list.
