Ultraprocessed Foods Linked to Major Heart Risk
7 Feb
Summary
- Ultraprocessed foods increase cardiovascular disease risk by 47%.
- These foods are high in sodium, sugar, and harmful fats.
- Colorectal cancer rates are rising in young adults.

Diets heavy in ultraprocessed foods significantly elevate the risk of cardiovascular disease in adults by 47 percent, according to Florida Atlantic University researchers. Data from the U.S. National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, involving 4,787 adults, revealed that individuals consuming the most ultraprocessed items faced the highest risk.
These findings underscore growing concerns as ultraprocessed foods constitute about 60 percent of the American diet. Typically high in sodium, sugar, and unhealthy fats, they pose threats to heart and gut health and are associated with an increased risk of cancer and premature death.
Furthermore, the study noted a connection to colorectal cancer, with rates rising among adults under 50. Doctors suggest ultraprocessed foods may be a contributing factor to this trend, highlighting the critical need for awareness and prevention strategies.
