Ultra Processed Foods Linked to Early Death Risk
23 Sep
Summary
- Ultra processed foods increase risk of heart attacks, strokes, and early death.
- Daily consumption of UPFs linked to 14% increased risk of cardiovascular events.
- Additives in UPFs may harm gut microbiome and promote inflammation.
Extensive research involving 8.8 million individuals has revealed a significant link between the consumption of ultra-processed foods (UPFs) and increased health risks. Those with higher UPF intake faced a greater likelihood of experiencing heart attacks, strokes, and premature death.
Specifically, consuming 100g of UPFs daily was associated with a 14% rise in cardiovascular events and an 18% higher risk of death from any cause. The study reviewed 51 investigations spanning up to 32 years across multiple continents.
Scientists theorize that the additives common in UPFs, such as preservatives and artificial flavors, might negatively impact human health. These could potentially harm the gut microbiome, induce inflammation, and contribute to insulin resistance.
The review also highlighted increased risks for digestive conditions (31%), depression and anxiety (27%), cancer (12%), and high blood pressure (11%) among high UPF consumers.
Experts suggest that replacing UPFs with minimally processed alternatives could be beneficial for preventing chronic diseases. The findings were published in the journal Family Medicine and Community Health.
