Sandwich Salt Shocker: One Meal Exceeds Daily Limit!

A new analysis by Action on Salt & Sugar reveals that numerous popular shop-bought sandwiches in the UK contain concerningly high amounts of salt. One examined sandwich, the Smoked Chicken Caesar Club from Gail's, contained 6.88g of salt, surpassing the recommended daily adult limit of 6g and equivalent to nearly five McDonald's cheeseburgers.

Across 546 analyzed lunch items, one in 10 exceeded both salt and calorie health targets. Almost half would warrant a 'high' salt warning, and nearly a third deliver at least half of an adult's daily salt limit in a single serving. The campaign group criticized the government's voluntary approach to food nutritional quality, deeming it a failure.

Beyond salt, the study found a third of sandwiches were high in saturated fat, and over 14% were high in fat, saturated fat, and salt simultaneously. Additionally, almost all surveyed sandwiches provided less than a third of the recommended daily fibre intake, contributing to a less healthy overall nutritional profile.

However, the research also highlighted significant variations in salt content for similar products, indicating that reformulation is achievable. Several lower-salt options were identified, alongside retailers like Asda and Lidl, and out-of-home providers like Starbucks and Greggs, which met salt and calorie reduction targets. The findings underscore the pervasive issue of hidden salt in processed and convenient foods, contributing to health risks like high blood pressure, stroke, and heart disease.
