7 Jul
Summary
- An AI tool analyzes patient data to identify infection risks.
- This technology aims to improve patient care and hospital efficiency.
- The AI is licensed and supports clinical practice, not replacing staff.

A pioneering artificial intelligence (AI) tool is now in use at Kent and Canterbury Hospital, marking a first for the NHS. East Kent Hospitals NHS Trust (EKHUFT) is employing the AI, named MEMORI, to identify potential infections at an early stage.
MEMORI analyzes existing clinical information, including patient observations and demographics, to calculate an individual infection risk score. This innovative approach aims to free up valuable clinician time for direct patient interaction and care, contributing to better patient outcomes and smoother hospital operations.
The AI tool, developed in collaboration with UK health technology company Sanome, is fully licensed as a healthcare device. Staff from various clinical roles contributed to its development, ensuring it effectively supports real-world healthcare practices. Trust representatives emphasize that the AI is a supportive tool, not a replacement for medical professionals, and is expected to benefit patients, their recovery, and hospital bed management.
