UK Hospitals Strain Under Winter Flu Surge
8 Jan
Summary
- Flu hospitalizations rose 9% in the last week.
- Norovirus and Covid cases also saw an increase.
- Health Secretary urges eligible individuals to get flu jabs.

UK hospitals are experiencing renewed pressure as flu cases surge following the festive period. Figures released on January 8, 2026, show a 9% week-on-week rise in patients hospitalized with influenza, reaching 2,924. This increase follows a brief decline and occurs amidst a cold snap exacerbating the strain on frontline services. Norovirus and Covid-19 cases have also seen an uptick, contributing to an overall 5% rise in hospital bed occupancy to nearly 92%.
Health Secretary Wes Streeting emphasized that despite improvements in NHS preparedness, the current situation remains challenging. He highlighted that flu poses a significant risk, particularly to vulnerable groups such as the elderly, young children, and those with pre-existing health conditions. Vaccination is strongly recommended as the most effective preventive measure. Streeting urged all eligible individuals to receive their flu jab promptly to help alleviate hospital admissions and ensure critical emergency care remains accessible.
This surge comes after projections in December indicated a potentially severe flu season. Data from early December 2025 revealed a 56% increase in hospital admissions for flu in England compared to the same period in 2024. The government continues to encourage preventative measures to manage winter pressures and support NHS staff through this demanding period.
