UK Bans Nail Chemical Over Fertility Fears
18 Aug
Summary
- New regulation bans TPO chemical in gel nail products.
- TPO chemical linked to fertility issues in animal studies.
- Gel manicures themselves remain legal, TPO-free options available.

Effective August 15, 2026, a new regulation in England, Scotland, and Wales prohibits the introduction of new cosmetic products containing trimethylbenzoyl diphenylphosphine oxide (TPO). This chemical, commonly used in gel nail polish to aid curing under UV light, has been reclassified as a 'Category 1B' reproductive toxicant based on animal studies indicating potential fertility and reproductive issues.
Despite the ban being termed a 'gel nail ban,' industry experts emphasize that gel manicures are not outlawed. The regulation specifically targets TPO, and numerous salons have transitioned to TPO-free formulations. Manufacturers can no longer sell new TPO-containing products, but salons have until February 14, 2027, to use up existing stock before its sale becomes completely illegal. The Cosmetic, Toiletry and Perfumery Association has stated this ban is a precautionary step.
