UK Launches AI Cancer Lab for Personalised Treatment
15 Oct
Summary
- A new NHS lab uses AI for composite biomarker testing.
- This technology aims for truly personalized cancer treatments.
- Blood tests can now monitor cancer recurrence non-invasively.

A world-leading NHS laboratory has been launched in the UK to enhance personalised testing and treatments for cancer patients. The Royal Marsden Centre for Cancer Genomics is the first facility dedicated to a new generation of cancer diagnostics known as composite biomarker testing.
This innovative approach integrates patient and tumor information with artificial intelligence (AI) to create a comprehensive understanding of an individual's cancer. This enables doctors to offer more tailored treatments and facilitate access to clinical trials for NHS patients. Professor Michael Hubank explained that future treatments will involve continuous monitoring using multiple measurements, including DNA and RNA, analyzed by AI to adjust therapies as the cancer evolves.
The new center will also leverage expertise to assess emerging genomic technologies. Dr. Angela George highlighted that this will make personalized treatment accessible to more patients, especially those for whom traditional tumor biopsies are difficult. The ability to analyze tiny fragments of tumor DNA in blood samples will be crucial for detecting cancer recurrence or indicating the need for treatment breaks.
