Uganda Quarantines Congo Travelers Amid Ebola Fears
25 Oct
Summary
- Uganda mandates 21-day quarantine for travelers from Congo.
- Travelers to Uganda face intensified screening at borders.
- The country remains Ebola-free despite heightened precautions.
Uganda has instituted a strict 21-day quarantine for its citizens returning from the Democratic Republic of Congo, a nation bordering Uganda and experiencing an Ebola outbreak. This measure is part of heightened precautions to keep Uganda Ebola-free, as announced by Health Minister Chris Baryomunsi.
Intensified traveler screening is now in effect at Entebbe International Airport and all land border crossings. All individuals entering Uganda by air, land, or water must complete a passenger locator form to aid in contact tracing and monitoring efforts.
These precautions come amid investigations into an Ebola case in Nigeria involving a woman who had traveled from Uganda. While genomic sequencing suggests a link to a Kenyan strain, Nigerian authorities have found no direct connection. Uganda has a history of battling Ebola outbreaks and is coordinating with international partners.
