A new UC Irvine hospital, opening its doors to the public next Wednesday, will feature a special welcoming committee: a pack of therapy dogs. Healthcare staff have enthusiastically embraced these canine comfort providers, including P-Nut and Pixel, who are poised to begin their mission of bringing solace to patients.
The introduction of these therapy dogs aims to provide immediate emotional relief, allowing patients to temporarily set aside their medical concerns. Charge nurse Ronny Ao noted the instant positive impact these animals have, helping patients feel more like themselves during their hospital stay. This initiative builds upon UCI's existing therapy dog program.
The therapy dog team at UCI comprises 14 dedicated canines, each with their own unique trading card, adding a touch of personality to their vital role. These dogs are permitted on patient beds and furniture, facilitating close interaction. They will be a regular presence, making their rounds daily and responding to specific patient requests.
